Under the Big Sky: Inside the Extraordinary World of One & Only Moonlight Basin, Montana
One&Only Moonlight Basin, Montana
The drive in set the tone immediately. Big Sky doesn’t reveal itself all at once; it builds slowly, teasing with wide-open valleys before suddenly delivering a panorama so expansive it almost feels unreal. And then, nestled into the mountain as though it had always belonged there, was One&Only — a masterclass in architecture that merges rugged Montana authenticity with the understated precision of contemporary luxury.
The design is extraordinary in that rare way where you stop noticing individual elements because the whole feels so effortlessly right. Low-slung structures echo the lines of the mountains, massive glass walls dissolve boundaries between inside and out, and natural materials — timber, stone, and warm metals — create a cocooning warmth that contrasts beautifully with the vast wilderness beyond. And then there are the fireplaces — everywhere. Crackling hearths greet you in the main spaces, intimate corners glow with flickering flames, and even within my suite, the fireplace became a defining feature: a beautifully designed double-sided hearth shared between the bedroom and bathroom, allowing you to soak in the bath while watching the flames dance through to the sleeping space beyond. It transformed everyday moments into something deeply atmospheric and indulgent — the kind of detail that quietly elevates an entire stay.
My room was a sanctuary: soft textures, thoughtful design, and a terrace that made it impossible not to linger outside, coffee in hand, watching morning light stretch across the peaks. Even in winter, the terraces become living spaces, shielded from wind yet fully embracing the sun.
The service deserves its own standing ovation. Exceptional without ever feeling formal, intuitive without being intrusive — the kind of hospitality where nothing is too much trouble, whether it’s arranging last-minute plans, remembering tiny preferences, or simply appearing at exactly the right moment with what you didn’t know you needed.
The spa absolutely steals the show. The outdoor hot tub pool and pool deserves its own love letter — perched against a backdrop so breathtaking it almost feels surreal. Floating in steaming water under endless blue skies, while oxygen therapy offered a surprisingly powerful reset at altitude after incredible gym workouts, leaving me clear-headed and energised for long days and beautiful evenings with great company.
And yes, the skiing. The ski lodge captures that elusive balance between serious alpine functionality and cosy elegance. Boots warming quietly by the fire, seamless slope access, and a rhythm that makes both adrenaline seekers and leisurely explorers feel equally at home.
But what stayed with me just as much as the skiing were the quieter moments. Meditative walks through snowy forest paths felt almost sacred — the hush of falling snow, sunlight filtering through trees, and the simple pleasure of moving slowly through such vast beauty. One day we snowshoed to lunch at the cutest log cabin imaginable, a storybook setting that felt lifted straight from a winter fairytale. The journey itself became part of the experience: laughter, crisp air, and that rare feeling of total presence.
Let’s talk mountain food at the Moonlight basic, I enjoyed delicious lunches at the Landing ski lodge, as well an intimate last night dinner at the Wildwood. The menus offer a remarkable selection of delicious delights that manage to feel indulgent yet rooted in the landscape. Breakfast at Wildwood quickly became my favourite ritual, so many delicious choices from the breakfast buffet but my favourite was the wild mushroom omelette, rich and earthy, best enjoyed slowly while watching the mountains wake up. And then there was the spicy soft shell crab on sourdough, a dish so perfectly balanced that I found myself thinking about it long after the plate was cleared.
The Akira Back Japanese dining experience deserves special mention. World-renowned chef Akira Back — celebrated globally for his innovative fusion of Japanese techniques with modern flair — has created something genuinely special here. The restaurant itself is stunning, layered with atmosphere and detail with roaring fire pits in the garden and made even more personal by the artwork of his mother, which decorates the space and adds a deeply intimate dimension to the dining experience. The result feels both elevated and soulful: impeccable precision and beauty on each plate paired with an environment that tells a story, turning dinner into something far more memorable than simply a meal.
The bar itself deserves its own moment of appreciation. Sophisticated yet deeply comfortable, it strikes that elusive balance between elegance and ease — plush textures, warm lighting, and architectural details that invite you to linger without ever feeling formal. It was here that we spent our first evening, settling into the space over a private dinner that set the tone for the entire retreat. Incredibly delicious canapés arrived one after another — beautifully presented, perfectly balanced delicious bites that felt both indulgent and refined — creating an atmosphere that was celebratory yet intimate, as if the space had been designed specifically for shared moments and meaningful conversations.
Being there as part of the IM8 Health retreat added another layer of meaning to the experience — less about beginnings and more about celebration. The gathering marked one year of phenomenal success, honouring how IM8 Health has rapidly grown to become the fastest-growing supplement company in the world. There was an unmistakable energy among the group: a sense of shared achievement, forward momentum, and deep connection. Wellness sessions felt especially powerful against such a dramatic natural backdrop, and the slower rhythm of mountain life encouraged genuine presence and reflection.
What struck me most was how One & Only Moonlight Basin manages to feel both expansive and deeply personal. It’s luxurious without shouting, adventurous without demanding, and restorative without trying too hard to be “wellness.” As I left, the sun was still blazing over snow-covered peaks, and I realised that what makes this place unforgettable isn’t just the architecture or the spa or the views — though each is exceptional. It’s the way everything comes together to create a feeling that’s difficult to describe but impossible to forget: the sense that you’ve stepped into a landscape that quietly calms you, one golden mountain moment at a time. A very special experience indeed. Very grateful to IM8 Health & the team at One & Only Moonlight Basin for this magical experience.
